Today, Q13 Fox News covered a story the importance of postpartum support and how Listening Mothers offers a unique and effective program for new mothers.
Here’s a link to the story:
Yaffa Maritz, founder of Listening Mothers, and I were interviewed on the live portion of the Morning Show. Our intention was to provide mothers with a sense of how Listening Mothers support new mothers, including mothers who are struggling with postpartum depression.
I shared my own struggle with postpartum depression. Even with my knowledge as a therapist, it was difficult for me to recognize that I was suffering from postpartum depression since I was caught in the overwhelming experience of being a new mother. I was also filled with fear and shame influenced by my culture and family of origin. Once I was able to take in the feedback from health providers that what they saw from the outside was that I had moved beyond the baby blues and into postpartum depression, I sought out ways to support me in my struggle.
Although I am grateful for the support of many different healthcare providers, April Bolding in particular, the Listening Mothers program was an essential aspect of what helped me through one of the darkest times in my life. During the Q13 interview, I didn’t get a chance to say was how profoundly supportive I found the Listening Mothers program was…so much so that now I’m a Listening Mothers facilitator.
Post partum depression is common complication in the post partum healing process. 10-20% of moms experience postpartum depression. It is my deep wish that all mothers experience compassion for themselves in the challenge of being their motherhood journeys and that any mothers who are suffering from depression or anxiety find the support they need in order to move through their challenges.
